January 31, 2008 on 4:20 pm | In Internship/Gap Year news | No Comments

Since the full moon party on Koh Phangan last week, we’ve had beautiful diving conditions here on Koh Tao.

Experiencing our usual post full moon party rush, divers taking scuba diving courses and fun dives have been enjoying flat seas and good visibility.

DJL Diving’s Divemaster internship candidates have been getting invloved in the start of high season, assisting the instructors with PADI diving courses and learning to guide certified divers.

The big boat has been heading out each day diving at Koh Tao’s local dive sites such as the Japanese Gardens, Twins & White Rock near Koh Nangyuan. Meanwhile we’ve been continuing to run our high speed RIB out the Chumphon Pinnacles, for our popular late afternoon ’shark diving’ sessions. On one trip a couple of days ago, the divers reported seeing 11 sharks at one time!

This morning we also ran our intro to technical diving session, visiting the Unicorn Shipwreck north of Koh Tao - today there was good visibility right down to 48 metres!

Retired concert organist, William Hudson (from Alaska), joined us from a cave diving background. William went through the BSAC Combined Nitrox & BSAC Extended Range Diver Courses. He was joined by Leona Goh (Singapore), who’s taking a diving internship through to PADI Divemaster with DJL Diving.

Despite some challenging moments in training, the guys have turned out as competent deep air divers. They’re both now qualified to undertake decompression dives to 50 metres, using multiple tanks and nitrox blends up to 100% O2 for accelerated decompression.

Mitch joined us as an Open Water Diver, and over the past few weeks has progressed through his PADI Advanced Open Water, Rescue Diver & DM courses.

As part of his course, Mitch has been guiding certified divers around the Koh Tao dive sites, and helping out with the running of the DJL Dive boat. He also got to deep dive the Unicorn ship wreck, completing an intro to deco diving course with DJL, - right down to 46 metres!

As a member of Typhoon Squadron, when the MOD group visited DJL for a dive training expedition last month, Mitch got to join the guys on the Sampai Jumpa sailing liveaboard. The guys got to enjoy a 5 day trip, around Koh Tao and up through the Chumphon marine reserve.

Adhering to the long established Koh Tao ritual, Mitch celebrated passing his PADI Divemaster Course by completing his ‘snorkel test‘ down at Lotus Bar on Sairee Beach. Joined by co-intern James, the guys drank a bucket of cocktail through a snorkel.
